Back in January, a portal to a new world opened to me. The invitation came in the form of an email from Bill Homyak. Bill was inviting energetic people who enjoyed plants, birds, or the environment to lead Docent Tours at the Southbay Botanical Garden. Janka and I decided that since we were looking into buying a home, this would be a great way to introduce ourselves to some of the particulars of landscaping.
Next we met with Richard Zasueta. Richard is a great guy, knowledgeable, personable, energetic and sincere. I have really enjoyed listening and talking with him. He has taught us so much about the place we live and how to better cooperate with our environment. Be it a matter of soil, climate, or biology, generally there will be a compromise that can bring harmony to the situation. Richard seems to be able to ask questions that lead you to that harmony. Richard helped Janka and I prepare and facilitate a walk of our own. It was a wonderful experience that we can’t wait to participate in again.
Recently, Kay Smith gave an informative and well laid-out walk discussing the Citrus and Fruit trees. Whether it was the aromatic leaves of the Allspice tree or various ways individuals use the shoots, leaves and fruit of the Plantain plant, Kay always gave a bit of information that was both interesting and useful. Whether you facilitate a Docent Tour or participate in one, they are a great way to meet and mingle with wonderful people from the community (Pictures Here).
Walks are free ($3 suggested donation) and require no reservation. Click for more Info!
